Up For The Cup

Eleven teams representing a number of sites and partner companies took part in our second annual Five-a-Side soccer tournament on Saturday 3 June. After a highly competitive but fun-filled day a team from Jigsaw emerged as the winner.

This year’s event was held at the Powerleague five-a-side venue in Birmingham which allowed us to expand the format and invite more teams to take part. That meant teams from our Gloucester (winners last year), Tilbury, Runcorn, Shotton, and Bristol sites were able to enter. These were joined by two mixed-gender teams representing the head office and Quedgeley sites as well as teams from Jigsaw, our managed transport specialist subsidiary, and Avon Distribution, our partnership with RT Keedwell serving Accolade Wines.

Director’s Kate and John Downton both played, with Rob Emery, Richard Downton and Andy Downton all there to support on the day.

The teams were divided into two mini-leagues with each playing five games to decide who would go through to the knock-out quarter-finals. This resulted in the teams from Jigsaw and Barely Athletic (representing Shotton and Runcorn) making the final. After a tense few minutes, the final ended as a draw which meant the dreaded penalty shoot-out was needed. The team from Jigsaw held its nerve and won which meant that Barely Athletic was runner-up for the second year in a row.

Jigsaw was presented with the trophy and a case of Budweiser while the runners-up all received a small award. Both mixed teams also received a trophy for their participation. The weather held out all day and the players all received a buffet and access to the all-expenses paid bar.
