While many people’s thoughts were on some minor football tournament or other on the opposite side of the continent, the real competition last weekend was to be found a bit closer to home, at Downton’s annual five-a-side football competition. Nine teams representing Downton sites and company group members descended on Birmingham’s Powerleague venue on Saturday 16 June for the knock-out competition.
The teams were divided into two mini-leagues with the winners and runner-up in each progressing to the semi-finals. After some fierce competition this resulted in a final between Avon Distribution Ladies and last year’s winners, Jigsaw Transport. This year, however, it was the Avon team that came out on top.
The tournament also included a plate knock-out competition for the teams who did not qualify for the semi-finals. This was won by Tekkerslovakia, from Downton’s Chatham/Tilbury depots, with the runners-up Hardly Athletic representing the Runcorn/Shotton sites.
Heather Battersby from the Sapa, Birtley site won Woman of the Tournament while Petr Moltas from the Runcorn depot won Man of the Tournament. James McSweeney representing Dunstable won the prize for the day’s top scorer.
During the afternoon team members and their families were entertained in a special guest area with food and bar and, if anyone was really interested, the live games in that other tournament on a big screen.
