Rise in toll roads feared following Queen’s Speech

Reform announcements in the Queen’s Speech have prompted concerns over an ‘inevitable rise’ in road tolling.

Speaking yesterday, her Majesty announced a bill that will ‘bolster investment in infrastructure’ and turn the Highways Agency into a Government-owned company.

In response, the Prospect union said it is ‘very concerned’ the Highways Agency was being prepared for ‘full-scale privatisation’ which would lead to an increase in toll roads.

Meanwhile the news was welcomed by the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE), who said the financial assurances associated with this move would help the industry ‘invest more in its people and capabilities’.
