Discussions have been held between the Road Haulage Association and the business secretary, Vince Cable, to talk about fears that the driver shortage is having a major impact on the logistics industry and the economy as a whole.
RHA chief executive Richard Burnett last week called for the government to assist in providing a training fund for aspiring HGV drivers to obtain their licence.
Burnett also said that in order to secure funding for the training of new HGV drivers, the RHA would look to engage directly with the Department for Work and Pensions, the Department for Transport (DfT) and the Treasury.
A roundtable discussion on this issue is expected between representatives from the Treasury, DfT and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills within the next fortnight.
