Pilot will grant Highways Agency officers power to stop HGVs

In September a pilot scheme will launch that gives Highways Agency officers power to stop any lorries they believe are potentially harmful or driving dangerously and send them back to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) for re-examination.

Currently, Highways Agency officers only have authority to redirect traffic, with a small number allowed to stop vehicles.

A DVSA spokesperson said: “The Highways Agency officers will be supplementing, not replacing, existing DVSA resources.”
