Haulage operators are being advised by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) to prepare early for Transport for London’s (TfL) Safer Lorry Scheme.
The scheme, which goes live on 1 September, sets out a number of requirements for HGVs over 3.5 tonnes operating in London. This includes having to be fitted with sideguards, and kerb view and front mirrors.
Operators will face £50 fixed penalties or £1,000 court fines if they are found to be in breach of the new rules, which apply to the entire London Low Emission Zone.
Ahead of the scheme going live, the FTA has issued a warning to operators calling on them to check their vehicle types against TfL’s exempted vehicle list, and to make sure all lorries are properly fitted with sideguards and mirrors.
