The Road Haulage Associate (RHA) has told the Department for Transport (DfT) that the relaxation of drivers’ hours rules, resulting from Operation Stack, has gone too far.
The EU daily driving limit of nine hours has changed to 11 hours, and reduced the daily rest requirements from 11 hours to nine hours. The change applies to drivers using the Channel tunnel or ferries through Dover and only applies for the next month.
The RHA has said it welcomed the announcement of a relaxation of enforcement however the extension of the driving day plus a reduction of the compulsory rest period is ‘ill-judged’. However, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) has spoken out in support of the measures saying they are a “proportionate response by the Government to just one aspect among many which have arisen as a result of the problems in Calais”.
