MEPs give the go ahead for safer lorry designs

A vote by MEPs on new, safer designs for large lorries has passed by a landslide, with 570 voting for the proposals (88 voted against).

As well as improving the safety of cyclists and other road users, it is claimed the new designs are more aerodynamic and would improve fuel efficiency.

The draft legislation says “a new cab profile will also contribute to improving road safety by reducing the blind spot in the driver’s vision, including under the windscreen and to the side of the vehicle, which should help save the lives of many vulnerable road users such as pedestrians or cyclists”.
