Transport for London (TfL) is to launch a Freight Compliance Unit (FCU) this summer, which will focus on the enforcement of HGVs in the capital.
The FCU will be a partnership between the Metropolitan Police, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and TfL, and will be based in London.
The unit will share intelligence with the City of London police force and support the Office of the Traffic Commissioners (OTC). This cooperation will ensure submissions to the OTC will be accompanied by a complete history of an operator’s compliance, allowing for an informed decision regarding O-licences.
Automatic number plate recognition is also expected to be used to much greater effect, enabling the FCU to improve the quality of incoming data and locate enforcement resources effectively.
