Last month, the European Commission voted to eliminate HGV black spots by making safer mirrors compulsory from July this year.
From July onwards, all newly registered vehicles will need to meet a new standard; increasing the plan area that the driver can see through the passenger side of the vehicle.
The standard applies to HGVs (over 3.5 tonnes) where the Class V mirror is fitted at least 2.4m from the ground. Rather than prescribing specific mirrors, the standard is performance-based. A combination of Class VI (wide angle) and V (close proximity) mirrors will be suitable to meet the requirement.
