Highways England pledges to remove 400 miles of roadworks for Christmas

Highways England has confirmed it is aiming to complete or lift 145 road maintenance schemes, equating to 400 miles of roadworks, by 6am on Wednesday 23 December. This will leave 98 per cent of its 9,534-mile network free from roadworks to ease congestion in time for the holidays.

Motorways affected will include the M1, M4, M5, M6, M11 and M25.

A further 39 sets of roadworks and lane restrictions will be suspended across 121 miles of carriageway. Any project being suspended will be temporarily removed until 2 January 2016.
