Car transporters will not be treated as abnormal loads at the Dartford Crossing, following a change of policy by the Highways Agency.
Drawbar transporters going through the northbound tunnels for the first time incurred a £42 charge under the old rules, with the overhang from the cars at the front and rear of the vehicles taking them over the 18.75m maximum length.
The additional charge was criticised by the industry, with hauliers commenting that extra costs would have to be passed on to customers. A campaign by the Road Haulage Association to reverse the charges received significant industry support, and encouraged the Highways Agency to review the regulation.
