The speed limit for lorries on single carriageway roads will be raised from 40mph to 50mph. The government announced the changes could result in savings of up to £11 million per year and that it is exploring the possibility of raising HGV limits on other roads.
Following the increase, the government has announced it will launch a six week consultation on a proposal to raise the speed limit for HGV’s on dual carriageways from 50mph to 60mph.
In a statement, Transport Minister Claire Perry said that by removing the 20mph gap between speed limits for lorries and cars, dangerous overtaking will be cut down. She also noted current speed limits for HGVs were introduced around 50 years ago and therefore should be updated in accordance with improved vehicle technology.
