HGV Road User Levy enforcement rate only 50 per cent in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland’s minister for the environment Mark Durkan has suggested that only half of foreign-registered trucks visiting the country are paying the HGV Road User Levy. 

According to recent data from the Northen Ireland Driver and Vehicle Agency – collected after the enforcement of the levy began in the region last November – compliance is around 50 per cent. 

The Irish Road Haulage Association had previously warned that enforcement of the levy on Irish vehicle operators could be challenging due to the number of border crossings in Northern Ireland, of which there are over 150.
