The idea of extending student loans to cover the cost of acquiring an HGV driving licence has been discounted by Nick Boles MP, Minister for Business and Skills.
The idea was first put forward by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) to alleviate the skills shortage in the haulage industry, and later supported by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on freight transport. However it has been considered to be inappropriate by the government.
In response to a letter from the APPG, Mr Boles said that adult learners undertaking full Level 3 or Level 4 qualifications approved for public funding may be eligible for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan.
