George Osborne invites RHA to driver shortage discussion

Chancellor George Osborne has invited Road Haulage Association (RHA) chief executive Richard Burnett to a “formal roundtable discussion” with the Treasury and Department for Transport (DfT) to discuss the possibility of government intervention to address the current HGV driver shortage.

The RHA pressed the chancellor for a meeting towards the end of last year after previous calls for the shortage to be included in the Autumn statement were ignored.  The association has called for a training fund to pay for new driver HGV tests rather than relying on foreign drivers.
