Downton held its first ever Apprenticeships Open Day on Saturday 20 June.
The event saw around 40 people from across the county come to the company headquarters in Moreton Valence to learn more about a potential career as a Downton driver apprentice.
The day took the form of a series of presentations by Downton’s Training and Recruitment Manager Ruairi Spencer, who explained the details of our apprentice roles and gave a flavour of life in the world of logistics. Candidates were then taken on a tour of the Downton HQ, where they saw some of our LGVs in action and learned more about the vehicles.
Ruairi Spencer said: “It was an extremely successful endeavour – one of our best recruitment events yet. We now have 19 new candidates being interviewed for a driver apprentice role with Downton, all thanks to the Open Day.”
We have committed to taking on 20 new apprentices each year from 2015 onwards through our nationwide apprenticeships programme, which was launched in September last year.
Downton operations director John Downton said: “Logistics like many sectors is facing a skills shortage at the moment. As an industry we need to be committed to increasing the skills pool, rather than just fighting each other for the limited talent that there is.
“Apprenticeships are a great way to do this, and we are looking forward to bringing more enthusiastic young talent into our business and the industry as time goes on.”
The apprenticeships run for two years, and are available to applicants between ages 18-24. The applicant needs to hold a full category B car licence and have zero penalty points.
By the end of the apprenticeship, the apprentices will hold the full range of licences needed by a logistics professional, including forklift truck, shunters and an LGV C+E class licence. They will then take on a fully employed position on Downton’s LGV driver team, operating nationally across the UK.
