FTA supports use of longer semi-trailers following DfT trial

The Freight Transport Association has highlighted the benefits of longer semi-trailers, after trials show that they pose no greater safety risk than normal and can make a valuable contribution in reducing HGV miles and carbon emissions.

The Department for Transport recently released figures showing that longer semi-trailers, which are up to 2.05m longer than standard 13.6m units, are being operated safely and responsibly.

The results of the trial, launched in 2012, show that on average operators can save one journey in 22 as a result of using LSTs.
