The DVSA has accepted the EU rules on load restraints for curtain-sided trailers and bodies.
The change in policy at the DVSA means the agency now accepts that loads carried inside curtainsiders built to the European Standard EN 12642-XL do not need internal load restraint, as the trailers are strong enough to contain the load.
Up to now, the DVSA has followed the Department for Transport’s code of practice – Safety of Loads on Vehicles. The code says curtains provide only weather protection because they do not meet the load restraint requirement of withstanding a sideways force equivalent to 50 per cent of the weight of the load.
