Downton targets skills boost with first Apprenticeships Open Day

Downton is holding its first Apprenticeships Open Day at the company headquarters in Moreton Valence, Gloucester, on 20 June 2015.

The event will allow young people from across Gloucestershire to explore the careers on offer at Downton – ranked as one of the top businesses in the county – and to learn more about the logistics industry and apprenticeships in general.

The Open Day comes as we have committed to taking on 20 new apprentices each year from 2015 onwards through our nationwide apprenticeships programme, which was launched in September last year.

Downton operations director John Downton said: “Our apprenticeship scheme has been running for just over half a year, and we’re incredibly enthused about the interest we’ve had from dozens of young people looking to begin an exciting and rewarding career.

“Our first intake of apprentices in September 2014 has been incredibly successful, and we want to build on that success by committing to hiring 20 new apprentices this year – and every year from here on in.

“Logistics like many sectors is facing a skills shortage at the moment. As an industry we need to be committed to increasing the skills pool, rather than just fighting each other for the limited talent that there is. Apprenticeships are a great way to do this, and we are looking forward to bringing more enthusiastic young talent into our business and the industry as time goes on.”

The majority of the roles being created will be LGV Driver Apprenticeships, however there is also an opportunity being created for an LGV Workshop Technician Apprentice, based at our VOSA-accredited fleet engineering facility at Moreton Valence.

The apprenticeships run for two years, and are available to applicants between ages 18-24. The applicant needs to hold a full category B car licence and have zero penalty points.

By the end of the apprenticeship, the apprentices will hold the full range of licences needed by a logistics professional, including forklift truck, shunters and an LGV C+E class licence. They will then take on a fully employed position on our LGV driver team, operating nationally across the UK.

The Apprenticeship Open Day begins at 09.00 and ends at 13.00 on Saturday 20 June 2015. For more information about the event, please contact Downton on 01452 888203.
