Downton Recognised for Outstanding Business Contribution in Gloucestershire

Moreton Valence-based logistics company Downton have won major prizes at The Grow Gloucestershire Showcase Awards 2016.

Ryan Williams was announced as an Outstanding Young Person in the Workplace Finalist, whilst Downton received the Outstanding Business Contribution Award for its contribution to growing Gloucestershire through its apprenticeship scheme and support for young people in the county.

Gloucestershire County Council’s Grow Gloucestershire Showcase Awards celebrate and recognise young people aged 14 to 24 who have kick-started their careers, and the businesses or schools who have helped them. This year’s awards were presented at a gala event held at Cheltenham Racecourse on Tuesday 22 November.

Ryan Williams, 18 from Dursley, is completing an apprenticeship as a HGV Workshop Technician. He was presented with the Outstanding Young Person in the Workplace Finalist in recognition of his positive, well-mannered and enthusiastic attitude towards his colleagues and the tasks he undertakes.

Downton’s apprenticeship scheme has been extremely successful, with a 100 per cent pass rate and 96 per cent retention rate. Every driving apprentice who has successfully completed their training has then joined the company’s HGV driving team in full-time positions throughout the country.

Andrew Downton, MD at CM Downton, said: “We are extremely proud of ourselves and Ryan for winning these awards and pleased that our efforts as a company have also been recognised by Grow Gloucestershire. Supporting young people through apprenticeships and other local initiatives is important to us as a business. Ryan is making a real contribution to our workshop team and helping keep our vehicles on the road.”
