Downton looks to the future with second annual Apprentice Open Day

Leading UK logistics company C M Downton is holding its second annual Apprentice Open Day at the company headquarters in Moreton Valence, Gloucester, on Saturday 7 May 2016.

Since launching its apprenticeship scheme in 2014, Downton has taken on 22 young apprentice drivers aged between 18 and 24, and aims to hire a further 20 apprentices every year from now on.

The Apprentice Open Day – the successor to last year’s highly successful inaugural event – gives young people from across Gloucestershire the chance to explore the apprenticeships on offer and register for the next round of assessments, which take place every 6-8 weeks.

Downton operations director John Downton said: “We had over 40 young people attend our first open day last year.  Half of these came back for formal interviews, with a number going on to secure a role with the company.

“The event is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the company, the job and the industry in general.  Being a lorry driver may not be something that many young people have considered, but for the right person it can be one of the most rewarding and exciting careers out there.

“So far we have given 22 young people a chance at an exciting, well-paid career while bringing much-needed talent into our business – it’s a win-win situation.  We urge anyone who is approaching the end of their school career to come along and see what’s on offer and what we are about as a company – it may be the best move you ever make.”

Apprenticeships with Downton run for two years, and are available to applicants between ages 18-24.

The majority of the roles being created by Downton will be LGV Driver Apprenticeships, however there is also an opening for an Apprentice Transport Planner, who will work as part of the team that plans and manages all of Downton’s nationwide distribution activities.

For driver apprenticeships, the applicant needs to hold a full category B car licence and have zero penalty points. By the end of the apprenticeship, the apprentices will hold the full range of licences needed by a logistics professional, including forklift truck, shunters and an LGV C+E class licence.

The Apprenticeship Open Day begins at 09.00 and ends at 13.00 on Saturday 7 May 2016. For more information about the event, please contact Downton on 01452 888203 or visit the dedicated page on our website: www.downton.co.uk/apprenticeship-open-day
