Two women who have built successful careers at CM Downton have been shortlisted for a major award highlighting successful women in the transport industry. Jan Overthrow, Transport Supervisor at Downton’s Gloucester warehouse, and Jannette Wallace, the company’s Runcorn Depot manager, have both been shortlisted for the Leader Award in the Freight category of the Freight Transport Association’s prestigious Everywoman in Transport & Logistics Awards 2017. Now in their tenth year these major industry awards highlight the success of women in the transport sector.
Jan Overthrow has worked at Downton’s head office in Moreton Vallance, Gloucestershire, for sixteen years. In her main role as traffic supervisor, she is responsible for co-ordinating the operation and movement of the company’s growing fleet of over 600 tractor units and 1,800 trailers. In this capacity she manages a team of thirty planners as well as drivers. Having paved the way for females to enter the business, Jan now passes on her wisdom and knowledge to the youngest members of the team.
Jannette Wallace joined Downton twelve years ago when the company had just one contract in the North West. Since then, Jannette has helped the business grow and today, as manager of the Runcorn depot, she is responsible for a team of over 200, including a 106-truck fleet, serving seven main regional contracts and a 10 acre site incorporating a 90,000ft2 warehouse. The site’s revenues have risen six-fold in the past five years.
John Downton, Operations Director at CM Downton, said: “Jan and Jannette have over many years demonstrated the expertise and professionalism needed to succeed in the modern transport industry and make a significant contribution to our business. In addition to building their own successful careers they have both mentored and motivated a number of our apprentices – women and men – to develop their own skills and careers within Downton’s.”
The winners of the FTA’s Everywoman in Transport & Logistics Awards will be announced at a gala dinner in London on Wednesday 21 June.
