Proposals for on-the-spot fines for truckers who fail to pay the HGV levy or break the driver’s hours rules have been put forward by the government. The plans are particularly aimed at improving enforcement of these rules for foreign vehicles.
Enforcing driver’s hours rules on foreign vehicles is currently difficult, as drivers cannot be issued with a court summons. A consultation, which will run until 11 August 2014, has been launched on the option of on-the-spot fines rather than immediate court action.
The change would mean enforcement officers could issue a penalty up to 28 days after an offence was committed.
