Plans have been announced this week for approximately £1,000 of retrofitting for all HGVs entering London in order to reduce blind spots and improve all-round driver visibility.
The proposals put forward by Mayor Boris Johnson take previous measures – including sideguards and close-proximity mirrors – one step further and include bigger side windows and panels.
Between now and next year, the government will be working with freight operators, cycling groups and vehicle manufacturers to decide on a standard to make the requirement legally enforceable.
A consultation will be held on the plans in January next year with the intention for the work to be completed by April 2016.
