According to the Home Office, the number of stowaways found by the Border Force rose by almost 100 per cent last year.
The figure rose from 782 in 2013 to 1,463 in 2014, according to official government statistics. The Home Office, however, refused to confirm how many were found at individual ports.
The Road Haulage Association commented on the rise, arguing that most stowaways would go through the Channel Tunnel, and that Border Force should focus its efforts there.
